Chapter Fourteen

OCTAVIA

“Are you okay?” I ask softly as we walk out of the hospital arm in arm.

He shrugs. “I’m really sorry, Octavia, I really didn’t mean to hurt you,” he tells me. “I know that I shouldn’t have hit Rush, but he pushed me to the limit.”

I nod, in complete understanding. “Sometimes, Cage, there’s only so much we can take before we break and everyone reacts in different ways. While I understand that you have been dealing with a lot lately, violence is never the answer. But I’m also extremely proud of you for owning up to your mistakes. It takes guts to do that.”

“Are you okay?” he questions.

“I’m fine, I had surgery on my head a few years ago and that’s why Effie and Mayhem are so worried. But I’m fine, the doctor said so, a good night's rest will make it all okay.”

“What do you need? I’ll help.”

My heart melts at his words. God, he’s the sweetest kid ever. “I’m fine, honestly. I would have been out sooner, just because they wanted to be sure.” I give him a reassuring smile, wanting him to know that I don’t blame him. I never will. “So, how much trouble are you in for what went down in school today?”

He releases a groan. “I’m suspended,” he tells me and my heart sinks. “Dad’s pissed that I hit you.”

I frown. “Did he say that?”

He shakes his head. “No, he didn’t need to. He was fine until he found out that it was you that was hurt. Then he changed.”

“Cage, hunny, I don’t think your dad’s mad at you. I’m not, and your dad loves you. It’s so clear to see. I think he’s upset that I was hurt, not that you’re the one that did it. It was a mistake, one that shouldn’t have happened, but you know that.”

He nods. “I know, I’m so sorry, Octavia, I never meant to hurt you,” he repeats again.

I look up at the boy who’s been through so much in the past few months and pray that he’s okay. Putting on a brave face is easy to do, but when you're in pain it’s easy to pretend and just keep the pretense going until you drown in the pain. I know this from experience and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

“I know you didn’t and I’m not angry about what happened. It was an accident, Cage, please understand that.”

He nods somberly, but before he answers me, Digger joins us. Cage is on my left and Digger on my right. I lean into him, taking the support that he’s giving me. I love him and I want a future with him. But everything’s not as plain sailing as that. The news I got today makes things even more complicated. But no matter what, my aim is to make Cage’s life stable—as stable as it can be—I can’t uproot his life anymore than it’s already been.

“You doin’ okay, babe?” Digger asks as we reach his truck. “No headache? Any pain?”

My heart melts at his words.
